Lyngar Kennel, Portuguese Water Dog Puppies Ontario

We, Lynne and Gary Benson, are originally from Mississauga Ontario; in 2012 we retired to our cottage property near Port Carling Ontario on beautiful Lake Muskoka where we live during the summer months. During the winter months we enjoy the warmth of sunny Florida at our home in Rotonda West; the best of both worlds.

We are select breeders committed to meet the breed standard for conformation, health and temperament. Prior to breeding, both bitch and stud dog are tested for all hereditary diseases – Optigen PRA and IC, GM-1, JDCM, and AKC DNA Profile - according to the requirements of the PWDCC/PWDCA, and this includes OFFA hips and elbows at 2 years of age and CERF eye testing annually.

When we do breed, I select a pairing to enhance structure and temperament. The puppies are whelped in our home and cared for by me 24/7. I do neurological stimulation exercises on each puppy from day 3 to day 16; dew claws are removed and pups are de-wormed; we do temperament testing at 7 weeks and the pups are Vet health checked, and get their first vaccinations and microchips at about 7 weeks old prior to going to their carefully selected forever homes.

We’ve always had a dog in the family. Initially we had a Sheltie called Chelsea. Then we opted for a non-shedding breed and a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier called Kady came into our lives. We’ve also always had a cat; first there was Amos and then Abby who passed away in December 2013 of cancer. Currently, we have 2 PWDs, Jenna and Miga who are our constant companions whether in Muskoka or Florida.

Jenna was handled for her Canadian championship by Will Alexander and went on to earn her AKC CH as the girls and I travelled across New York State from dog show to dog show during the winter of 2007/2008. At that time we also had Stella, who was with us for almost a year and who eventually went home to BC with her Can/Am CH and her CGN and AWD Titles. She continued in the show ring out west earning her BIS and BISS and also her WWD Title (BIS BISS Can/Am CH Samador Starlight Serenade, CGN WWD “Stella”). In January 2010 Stella had her first litter…I went out to see the Olympics in Vancouver, visited with Mavis McClintock (Samador) and brought home my Olympic Mascot!

Miga was owner handled (by me!) in the conformation ring and although I loved every minute of the experience…it took me 10 months to earn her Canadian championship.

My husband Gary is responsible for all the major obedience training with the girls. As much as I love training the girls, it just isn’t cost effective when I do it. Gary achieved both Jenna and Stella’s AWD’s on their first try, during the summer of 2008…Oh yes, did I mention that Jenna had just had her first litter? Jenna had 2 more litters in January and August of 2011, after which she was retired from breeding.

I was involved with the PWDCOntario for several years as Water Trial Secretary. In the summer of 2012 after he retired, Gary resumed training both girls for water trials. He made it easy for me to handle Miga for her AWD (finally!) and then her WWD (the next day). Gary handled Jenna for 2 legs of Courier Water Dog all in a weekend. Gary switched over to an obedience training regimen into the fall and succeeded at getting both girls their CD Titles; “Trainer extraordinaire”. In 2012 Jenna achieved the “Top Obedience Award” placing 4th in the total number of points won by Portuguese Water Dogs.
